2013: Segue Institute for Learning, Central Fall, RI named RIASCD Whole Child Recognition School 2013-2014 Whole Child Press Release On Thursday, December 19, The Segue Institute for Learning in Central Falls was awarded RIASCD’s Whole Child Recognition Award by RIASCD Executive Director Betty Brito. Rhode Island ASCD is an affiliate of ASCD, an international education organization that serves over one hundred and forty thousand educators in 138 countries. The Whole Child Recognition Program is aligned to ASCD’s Whole Child Initiative (http://www.wholechildeducation.org), “an association-wide effort to change the conversation about education from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the development of children who are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.” Mr. Angelo Garcia, Founder and Head of School, received the award on behalf of the entire school during a school wide assembly attended by Elizabeth Roberts, RI Lieutenant Governor; James Diossa, Mayor of the City of Central Falls; members of the Board of Directors and other distinguished guests. Choral performances and achievement awards for scholars complemented the celebration. The Rhode Island Whole Child Recognition Program seeks to recognize those schools that demonstrate a commitment to action for the whole child. It is designed to commend those who have gone beyond the inspirational words of a vision to actions that result in learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically and academically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency, and ready for the world beyond formal schooling. Check out more of the story here. Segue Institute for Learning’s actions are driven by the School Wide Innovation Plan and align it to the Whole Child initiative. Key points include: Healthy –The health education curriculum addresses the physical, mental emotional and social dimensions of health. It includes a wealth of community partners to enable youth and their families to learn about community based resources. Safe – The Student and Family engagement Team supports families to enable student success via PBIS, home visits and “Do What I Do” workshops. Parents and the community are welcome at all school events. Engaged –R.E.A.C.H. (RESPECT, ENTHUSIASM, ACHIEVEMENT, CITIZENSHIP AND HARD WORK) are reflected in the Segue pledge which includes high expectations that guide student behavior and academic engagement. Supported – School advisory groups are small and intentional. Advisories are student driven and culturally competent with engaging activities. Student lead focus develops leadership and facilitation skills. Challenged – Curriculum is geared for student success in high school and includes community based service learning projects, performance based assessments and portfolio submission. Schools that are recognized through this program will be nominated by the Rhode Island affiliate for ASCD’s Vision in Action: the Whole Child Award and will receive a school banner and 10 memberships in the local affiliate. The national award carries with it national recognition, an opportunity for a team to attend ASCD’s international conference with all expenses paid where the award will be presented. The winning school will also be featured guests on the live taping of the Whole Child Podcast during the conference. The award at the national level also includes an institutional membership in ASCD. Ponaganset High School in the Foster-Glocester school system was awarded Honorable Mention for its work and was presented a banner in recognition of its achievements.
